The Black Scholar is an active peer-reviewed scholarly journal published quarterly in the United Kingdom by Routledge, part of the Taylor & Francis Group. Established in the San Francisco Bay Area in 1969, the Black Scholar is one of the oldest and most influential modern research journals on black studies, and is often credited with being central to the emergence of the field.

Founded by Robert Chrisman, Nathan Hare, and Allan Ross, the primary mission of the journal has been to chronicle, analyze, and debate the conditions and the emancipatory efforts of Black people across class, nationality, gender, generation, sexuality and ideology. Currently edited by Louis Chude-Sokei, University of Washington, the Black Scholar publishes both peer-reviewed articles and materials evaluated by the editorial board, as well as interviews, poems, stories, and review essays. The journal is currently based at the African American Studies Program, Boston University.
