Forum: bookmobile Subject: Technology/startup advice

I would like to know more about the technology and processes used to facilitate On Demand printing and perfect-bound book making. I am in the process of developing an initiative in Togo, Africa similar to the bookmobile in all but it’s mobility, in conjunction with a French NGO. We hope to see literacy rates increase once there is a greater supply of reading materials for the selected population.

The project in Togo is a pilot project; hopefully the results will give adequate reason to expand the number of sites. Currently, I am preparing a thesis on the subject of literacy and pedagogic reading materials, and as well I am interning with On Demand Books LLC.

I would appreciate any discussion, especially technical advice as to how texts can be formatted for printing, suggested technology to use, and if possible, sources of used equipment. I am also interested in learning more details about the inputs and outputs of existing bookmobiles, so that I might have an idea as to how much paper, glue, power, etc. we might anticipate using. We have been in the process of researching different types of binders, printers, cutters, software, and sources of (French) texts.

Thank you in advance for any assistance that can be provided.
