The Society’s largest collection of palm leaf manuscripts was formed by Charles Matthew Whish (1794-1833). Whish was a civil servant in the Madras Establishment of the East India Company. Brian Houghton Hodgson (1801-1894) was a British diplomat who worked in Nepal between 1820 and 1844. Hodgson was a naturalist and ethnologist and he also played an important role in the process by which Europeans came to understand the Indian background of the Buddhist faith. Hodgson made a large collection of Buddhist Sanskrit manuscripts, and in 1835-36 he donated 79 of them to the Royal Asiatic Society. Hodgson’s collection includes several manuscripts on palm leaf.
