The Society’s largest collection of palm leaf manuscripts was formed by Charles Matthew Whish (1794-1833). Whish was a civil servant in the Madras Establishment of the East India Company. Fascinated by the culture of southern India, Whish collected manuscripts covering a wide range of subjects: vedic literature and ancient poetry in classical Sanskrit, as well as technical and scientific works. Many of the Society’s Sinhalese and Tamil manuscripts were presented by Sir Alexander Johnston (1775-1849), one of the founders of the Society, who frequently gave books and other objects relating to Sri Lanka. His donations included manuscripts, maps, charts, and coloured drawings illustrating Sinhalese Buddhism and demonology. Most of the Sinhalese and Tamil manuscripts are on palm leaf.

Brian Houghton Hodgson (1801-1894) was a British diplomat who worked in Nepal between 1820 and 1844. Hodgson was a naturalist and ethnologist and he also played an important role in the process by which Europeans came to understand the Indian background of the Buddhist faith. Hodgson made a large collection of Buddhist Sanskrit manuscripts, and in 1835-36 he donated 79 of them to the Royal Asiatic Society. Hodgson’s collection includes several manuscripts on palm leaf.

The Morris Collection is unusual in that it is the only one of the Society’s manuscript collections that was purchased, not donated or bequeathed. It was bought in 1896 following the death of Richard Morris (1833-1894), a self-taught philologist who was a schoolteacher and Anglican clergyman. James Tod (1782-1835) was the first Librarian of the Royal Asiatic Society. He had served as Political Agent for the East India Company in Rajputana in northwestern India between 1818 and 1823. Founded in 1823,
the Royal Asiatic
Society of Great Britain and Ireland is
dedicated to promoting public interest and scholarly exchange into the
histories and cultures of Asia.
One of the ways the
Society does this is by providing free public access to its historic
collections of books, manuscripts, archives, and artworks, which originate from
across Asia.
The Society seeks to make as many of its collections as possible freely available
online. In addition to the selection of manuscripts available on the Internet
Archive, the Society has placed a large amount of material on its own website
and Digital Library.
The Society’s
historic collections include several hundred palm leaf manuscripts, in several
languages including but by no means limited to Sanskrit, Pali, Siamese,
Sinhalese and Tamil, originating from across South and South-East Asia. While
most are from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, a few are much older,
dating back to the 12th or 13th century AD. There
are almost 400 palm leaf manuscripts in the Royal Asiatic Societies digital
collection.
