US Elections after Citizens United Case On Jan 21, 2010, the 5-4 Supreme Court ruled in the Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission that corporate funding of political campaigns cannot be restricted under the First Amendment right of Freedom of Speech. No other ruling has done more to erode democracy and ensure corporations have more control of the American democratic process. Now any candidate without large financial support, or personal wealth will not be able to compete in campaigns,...

Every day we see how thousands of voices are raised in protest, voices that demand change and improvements, voices that call for better treatment, equal rights, liberty and justice. Very often those voices are silenced. They face repression and human rights abuses. And it is then that the natural human right to demand a decent life finds itself outside the law and ordinary people are transformed into criminals. But if we look back at history we find that many of the greatest achievements in the...

In this episode we cover chapter 1 of The Dawn of Everything, which is entitled Farewell to Humanity’s Childhood; or Why This isn’t a Book About the Origins of Inequality. In doing so, we look at: How the book’s underlying thesis: that human social structure is ultimately a matter of choice and experimentation, is fundamentally incoherent, and how this idea sets us up for future dramatic political failures, similar to those of Occupy Wall Street or the Great Peasant’s Revolt of 1381....

A critical reading of "The Wisdom of Kandiaronk, The Indigenous Critique, the Myth of Progress and the Birth of the Left" from David Graeber & David Wengrow's upcoming book The Dawn of Everything. In this chapter Graeber & Wengrow argue that: The European Enlightenment was heavily influenced by Native American critiques of European culture. In this episode of the It's Going Down podcast, we talk with a participant in the worker-student occupation movement that exploded in California in the fall of 2009 to the spring of 2010. With eyes on the present and the current #NeverAgain walkouts, we discuss the lessons and evolution of the movement that took place in the aftermath of the 2007-8 economic crash and grew in reaction to a proposed 32% increase in tuition costs within the University of California (UC) system. This is a set of documents produced by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) about the Occupy Wall Street movement and released to multiple parties in response to Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests in 2012 and 2013. Keeping track of different document sets on this topic can be challenging. DHS does not appear to have released file numbers along with the documents, and emails culled together in response to FOIA requests may not have ever been part of a particular file. In...

If we're to believe the mainstream media, the Occupy movement came out of nowhere and represents a new kind of politics. But we should be skeptical of such claims. Social movements scholar Barbara Epstein was a participant in the nonviolent direct action movements of the 1970s and '80s. She describes how they incorporated consensus-based decision-making, radical egalitarianism, and prefigurative politics. And she examines how their strengths and weaknesses have been passed down to Occupy....

At THE GUND INSTITUTE, we're responding to recent events in NYC by applying our science to develop real SOLUTIONS for many of the grievances raised by the protesters occupying Wall St. We seek to shift from a focus on growth at all costs to a focus on quality of life and fair distribution of wealth and of power. THE PEOPLE ARE READY for a new economics. It's time to open up the toolbox and rework the rules of the system together.

"The Buttonwood Agreement, which took place on May 17, 1792, started the New York Stock & Exchange Board now called the New York Stock Exchange, NYSE. This agreement was signed by twenty-four stock brokers outside of 68 Wall Street New York under a buttonwood tree. The organization drafted its constitution on March 8th, 1817, and named itself the "New York Stock & Exchange Board". In 1863, this name was shortened to its modern form, "New York Stock Exchange"....

From my wise friend Kevin: ""Revolutions are messy. They often start with a few committed and concerned citizens acting out against the wrongs that surround them. When the Revolutionary War began only about 20-30% of the Colonials thought it was necessary. When the Civil Rights Movement began it was hugely unpopular and was criticized for the breadth of the injustice it illuminated. When the gay rights movement began with a series of bar riots in LA and NY it was transfolk and street...
